One Day: A Review

'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.'
He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.'
15th July 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways.
So where will they be on this one day next year?
And the year after that? And every year that follows?
Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY. From the author of the massive bestseller STARTER FOR TEN.

Is this the best book I've ever read?

Yes, maybe, right now I can't think of any reason why not, but there will always be ones that will rival it, that I hold dear to me, but this one has struck a cord, and I think I may just love it.  Yes, definitely, it's love.

I'm fully aware I am jumping on the band wagon somewhat late here, hell, there's been a film and everything; although I would like to point out that I haven't seen it, so I can't really on comment on anything to do with that.

Given that this is written by a male author I would have suspected that it wouldn't have been anything close to how amazing this book really is.  I know this is something of a controversial thing to say, but my general experience is that female authors are far better, hell, we got to have something that we excel at in comparison to our male counterparts, and I hand on heart think writing is where we are miles ahead.  My favourite authors are women, I don't have many books that are written by men, infact, I am often put off a book if I see the author is male.  I am fully aware that there are other who will disagree with what I'm saying, and if you, my good readers, can give me some books by male authors that will change my opinion, then please point me in their direction.

This opinion however, is completely invalid when I consider this book, because quite frankly, it's a thing of beauty.  I love the format, the storyline, the characters, and the way it just sucks you in without you realising it.  I was all set to dislike this book given my opinion on the sex of the author, the fact it's quite famous (I'm always wary, it's sometimes totally unfounded), but at some point through the book I found myself unable to put it down, I needed, NEEDED to know how this was all going to end.

In case you didn't know the story is told on one day (St Swithins day, July 15th) over the period of twenty years and is based around the two main characters, Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley.  Friends, who after meeting on the day of their graduation, find their lives heading in very different directions.

For those of you who have read this book, please let me know if you too let out an audible 'Noooo!' at one point in the book, surely it wasn't just me, I even cried a bit.  Yes, cried again, I know I did it with the last book too, but this little cry was heartfelt.  I won't say no more, everybody should enjoy this book without it being ruined by me and my sizeable mouth.

I think it's fairly obvious here that I can do nothing but recommend this book.  Read it, read it again, and then let it sit lovingly on your shelf, just like I've done with my copy.

Please let me know if you have read this book, I'd love to know your thoughts.

I give this book a massive:
(Praise indeed!)
